WordPress Updates & Maintenance

The Hacker Problem

Hackers have been getting far more sophisticated and prevalent over the past few years.  These “hackers” are rarely individuals who are targeting you directly, instead they create malicious scripts that are sent out to attack thousands of websites at a time.  The purpose of these malicious scripts is to find and exploit loopholes in your website’s code in order to gain backdoor access to your website files and email server.  Once they gain access, they can do anything from shutdown your website, steal customer information, send fraudulent emails on your behalf, ruin your email delivery rate, and more.  Outdated WordPress plugins often contain these security loopholes, which means your chances of getting hacked increase proportionally to how often you update your WordPress plugins.

The Solution

Although updating WordPress plugins is easy, these updates can sometimes cause features on your website to break.  Websites with many plugins are far more likely to break during an update than websites with few plugins. Updating the WordPress plugins yourself is certainly an option but it can sometimes be risky- if something does happen to break we will be left scrambling to fix your website (or even worse, if you don’t notice the broken features until later on, it can become very expensive to troubleshoot and fix).
